In the Illinois Community

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois encouraged volunteerism and celebrated National Volunteer Week 2015 with Blue-Palooza.

Our employees love to give back and this week without a doubt the spirit of volunteerism is embedded in the fabric of our organization. In 2014 3,786 employees volunteered 56,529 hours for 532 different organizations. Every day, BCBSIL employees donate their time, talents and resources to causes that are important to them and the organization.

In honor of National Volunteer Week we dedicated the entire week to promote volunteerism at the workplace by offering ways employees can give back to our communities with Blue-Palooza!

On Tuesday, employees participated in an on-site volunteer event with FEED 6.  Volunteers packaged 50,000 meals over 2 hours.  These meals will be distributed from Northern Illinois Food Bank's network of pantries.

On Thursday, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois hosted nearly 20 organizations for a community partner fair.  Employees had the opportunity to meet with representatives from participating organizations to learn more about ways that can get involved in year-round volunteer opportunities.

Even though National Volunteer Week is over, that doesn’t mean we have to stop giving. Blue Cross employees will continue to donate their time to the causes that most closely tug at their heart strings.  A few of the organizations we have contributed to are:

KaBOOM!
Since 2009, BCBSIL has teamed up with a national non-profit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. To make that happen, KaBOOM! partners with communities in need to build playgrounds in just one day.

Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon
BCBSIL employees have participated in this day of service designed to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism in various activities such as park clean-ups and painting schools.

DCFS Toy Drive
BCBSIL has been a long-time supporter of the annual Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) Toy Drive. In 2015, BCBSIL donated an array of gifts to make 600 children's wishes come true for the holiday season.

As part of continuing efforts to bring health and wellness messages to a wide variety of communities, BCBSIL also had a presence at diverse events throughout the state, sponsoring the Health and Wellness Village at the African Festival of the Arts, participating in several cultural parades over the summer, and participating in the Illinois State Fair.

In addition, BCBSIL encourages and supports staff members serving on the boards of 501(c)(3) organizations and offers matching dollars to organizations where employees log volunteer hours.
