Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois wraps up 80th Anniversary Celebration with on-site Volunteer Event!

What a summer! Our 80th anniversary, 80 for 80 Summer of Service campaign has come to an end and we couldn’t be more thrilled with all that our great employees and volunteers did this summer. We have insured Illinoisans for more than 80 years, but our commitment to this state goes far beyond our business needs, we are here for our community in sickness and in health and that’s what separates us from the rest. We are here to give back to the community where we work and play, which is why we knew that the most fitting way to celebrate our 80 years was to celebrate with the community we call home.  Let’s take a quick glance at some of the events our employees have been a part of to help make our community thrive.

Among the many events we did, this summer we surprised 8 unsuspecting organizations with our 80th anniversary surprise grants, each worth $5,000. These grants were well received and we are excited to know that they will be used to expand much needed services in each of those organizations.

Our employees donated backpacks with supplies to the New Direction Homeless Center in Jacksonville, Illinois. A few other employees also prepared and served food at New Direction Homeless Shelter.

One day a month our employees volunteered at A Safe Haven Foundation’s on-site food pantry to distribute food to 1,000 community members.

New-hire employees packaged 2,000 toiletry kits for Chicago-based community partner organizations.

We’re always ready to put our best foot forward and we joined the American Heart Association at the Metro Chicago Heart Walk where over 450 of our wonderful employees volunteered their time to walk to help end heart disease.

We also participated in three KABOOM! playground “spruce-up” events to refresh previous builds that took place in University Park, Chicago and Posen Park.

To end our successful campaign, we broke a record! We partnered with Blessings in a Back Pack where over 350 volunteers gathered in our Chicago headquarters during their lunch hour to help pack 5,000 meals so kids could have meals for the weekend. Not only that, but BCBSIL also donated $5,000 to provide 50 students with weekend meals for the entire school year.

As an organization we couldn’t be any prouder of the giving spirit of our employees, but as Illinoisans we couldn’t be more proud of how generous our colleagues and friends are. Thank you for all that you do!
