After we agreed that I needed a new prescription, my doctor and I were talking through instructions. I asked if this prescription drug was covered under my health insurance prescription coverage. Then I remembered I can use my smart phone to look it up on Blue Access for MembersSM (BAM). You can, too!
After logging into BAM, here’s how you’ll find your drug list:
Understanding Your Coverage
Your drug list places prescription drug products in different coverage levels, or tiers. How much you pay out of pocket for a prescription drug is often less if you choose a drug that’s a lower tier. For example, generic drugs are normally the lowest tier with non-preferred brand drugs at the highest tier.
It will be helpful to understand your coverage when reviewing your prescription drug options with your doctor. The drug list helps you both select the right medicine. It can also help you save money since you’ll know you’re getting a covered prescription.
Searching Your Drug List
Internet access is all that’s needed to see if a prescription drug is covered. Instead of calling the number on the back of your ID card, using a mobile device to visit BAM lets all Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) members:
• Learn about generic drugs and if a generic option is available.• Enter the prescription drug name to see if it’s on your plan’s drug list, also known as a formulary. If it’s on the list, the drug is covered and you’ll only be responsible for paying the member share. If it isn’t on the list, you can still get your prescription filled; but, you may need to pay the full retail cost. • Calculate estimated costs for up to a 30- or 90-day supply.

See more about your prescription drug coverage on our public website. You’ll see drug list details, including what to do if your drug isn’t on it. Most important to remember…you can still get your prescription; you may just need to pay more.
