Michelle has been a Blue Cross and Blue Shield member for 12 years. “I get excellent care with my HMO,” she says.
An HMO health plan is designed so that you have care personalized to you. When you select an HMO, you choose a primary care physician, or one is assigned to you. This doctor, who knows you and your health history, refers you to any specialists you may need.
“I can have the referral that day,” says Michelle. “And I just have to make an appointment and go. … My experience with getting referrals with my HMO has been extremely easy.” Michelle’s family had Blue Cross and Blue Shield coverage when she was a child. Now, as an adult, she says, “Blue Cross and Blue Shield just makes me feel safe.”

MICHELLE: I feel I get excellent care with my HMO.
My primary care physician, if I go in with a concern,
she will research things. Or they will get back to
me as soon as possible. They will refer me to the
specialist I need to go to. So they're very attentive
to my medical needs.

I chose an HMO, because I have a chronic illness.
And the HMO just works best for me.
What I like best about my HMO is it's very easy to use.
And I like my doctors in my HMO.
My experience with getting referrals with my HMO
has been extremely easy. I go to my primary care physician.
They evaluate me, and then they refer me to whomever I need.
I can have that referral that day,
or they'll fax it to the specialist.
And I just have to make an appointment and go.
Before I started going to my primary care physician,
I did research online.
And I used the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Provider
Finder online and found it very simple to go by.
Just put in my zip code, and I was
able to compare all the doctors in that area.
I've never felt that my HMO was more concerned
with saving money than providing me good health care.
So growing up, when I was a little girl,
we had Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
And so now as being a grownup having
Blue Cross and Blue Shield, it just makes me feel safe.
