What is BCBS of Illinois' policy on coblation-assisted turbinoplasty and nasal coblation plasma surgery performed under CPT 30802 within SUR 706.001 BCBSIL policy? Why BCBS of Illinois keeps CPT 30802 approval for coblation-assisted turbinoplasty in the "pended" status but proceeds to issue the approval of the procedure to the medical services provider?
Another major healthcare insurance carrier Aetna Insurance considers coblation-assisted turbinoplasty and nasal coblation plasma surgery experimental, investigational and/or unproven because of insufficient evidence in the peer-reviewed literature. Aetna states that the effectiveness of coblation non-thermal volumetric tissue reduction for treatment of hypertrophy of nasal turbinates has not been established, refers to the study by Li PZ et al. (2013) that concludes that the long-term effect of turbinate coblation still needed further observation (see Aetna's CBP 0475 as of 02/14/23 -www.aetna.com/.../0475.html).
