Hi. I'm very confused by BCBSIL coverage of genetic testing for being an SMA carrier. According to documentation I've found from BCBSNC (the only branch of BCBS who seems to have accessible information on when genetic testing is covered) it states that if you have a close relative with SMA and you are trying to conceive, testing is covered. My stepson was just diagnosed which means my husband is a carrier, and we are trying to conceive, but my claim has been denied multiple times. Is it BCBSIL's policy that I'd first have to become pregnant to find out whether or not there is a 25% chance that we have another child with this devastating disease otherwise consider aborting a pregnancy which we don't morally believe is an option? I have to say, I'm very confused how this is even possible. Can someone please explain BCBSIL policy on this?
