Keep Your Cool: Hot Home and Closet Organization Tips for Changing Seasons

With the passing year comes changing seasons and with changing seasons of the year comes a need to rearrange your life and house a little to accommodate the shifts from hot to cold and cold to hot. Here are some things to remember each year during seasonal changes.

Hot to Cold

  • Weather
Put emergency supplies in your car trunk including a blanket and deicer in case you have a problem that leaves you stuck on the side of a road. In certain parts of the country, you may need to put on winter tires or outfit your tires with chains. Put your window scraper back in the car.

  • Home
Make sure your home isn’t leaking air at your windows. Have your chimney cleaned to allow Santa plenty of room for his annual visit and stock up on fire wood if needed.

  • Clothing
Moving into fall and winter is the time to pull out your down comforters, wool clothing and winter sport clothes. Take time to inspect your wool for moth damage, inspect your boots for proper tread and restock your sock drawer.

  • Food

Pull out your cold weather season recipes for stews, casseroles, soup and hot chocolate. Stock your pantry with staples including rice, pasta, pasta sauce, shelf stable milks and flour. Fill your freezer with meats. All this preparation will save time and help in the event you get iced or snowed in at home.

Cold to Hot

  • Weather
Always give yourself access to water. Park in the shade as much as possible.  Have your air conditioner inspected and be prepared if it goes out. Keep a watch on your pets, children, elderly friends and relatives as the heat can be extra dangerous for them.

  • Home
Exchange warm down comforters for lighter ones and put your cool pajamas at the top of your pajama drawer. Put away blankets, clean and replace window screens that may be dirty or damaged form the winter. Prepare any lawn equipment for yard maintenance. Throw out expired sunscreen and replace it with new ones. Expired sunscreens lose their power with time, so don’t ignore the expiration date. Stock your car, home and office with umbrellas to prepare for the unexpected storm or to serve as a parasol in extreme heat.

  • Clothing
The change from winter to spring and summer seasons is the time to clean all your winter clothing and store it away. Keep your sweaters and all wool items with moth balls in a trunk or drawer to keep your clothes from appearing with mysterious holes come the following winter. Summer clothes seem to lose their wear more quickly than winter clothes, particularly in southern climates. This is a great time to buy new t-shirts, bathing suits and sandals.

  • Food
Keep extra water bottles in the refrigerator for a quick grab and go to stay hydrated. Stock your refrigerator with fresh summer foods like vegetables, fish, fruit and especially cold watermelon!

Feng Shui Tips for Changing Seasons

Spend more time outside as during season changes. You need to acclimate to the temperature like you do getting into a bath or cool pool. For a season change into the fall, try getting out for a hike or and eating some soup. For spring try planting a garden or visiting an arboretum.

Declutter your closet and give away old clothes. Fill your home and wardrobe with colors that align with the seasons, like red, orange and purple for fall and winter and green, blue and pink for spring and summer. You’ll immediately be more in line with nature and yourself.
